SLUMP-BUSTERS!!!  BUSTERS WIN FIRST OF THE YEAR!!!!!

MVBA GUEST COLUMNIST:  BILL PLASHKE - L.A. TIMES

TIME FOR CUTTERS TO BEAT IT...

Bill Plashke:

Hats off to the La Verne Cutters!  Really, they deserve the first crack at the beer at the post-season awards banquet.....all 10 of 'em!

Their GM organized this league.  Their shooting guard successfully acquired the gym that houses the MVBA.  Heck, their small forward is a paramedic, helping to save lives on a daily basis!  Their power forward contributes to helping rebuild houses in the ABC show: "Biggest Home Makeovers"....or whatever that racket is called..

These guys are talented, alright.  They can update a website, and golf with the greatest of ease.

Just don't ask them to play basketball.

For the fourth consecutive week, the Cutters put a different line-up on the court.  And for the fifth time this year, they were run OFF the court.

Did anyone see their new addition?  6'4" - probably the best big man on the court.  Only question is, will he play next week?

Probably not.  The Cutters can't seem to get out of their own way this year. Even before they get to the court, they are worried how many wrist-bands they can put on.  They have domestic trouble.  They have to work.  They are chasing women. They are drunk, and on the 11th at Marshall Canyon.....

They are everywhere except in the gym, playing their opponent.  The end result has been a team that resembles the L.A. Clippers even more than the best the town has to offer.  For the Cutters, they are content with just talking about playing.

Remember when the Clement brothers played basketball?  Remember when the DeLang brothers were relevant?  Back in the day, these La Verne boys were the first ones to the court, and the last ones to leave.  Now, you are lucky if you see ONE of them playing.  Where is the Heart?  Where is the Pride?

It's there.  It's over at Senator Palpatating's with half of the Cutter roster during the game.  It's at the houses of these washed-up townies.  They're resting.  "My stomach hurts....I can't play today, bro...."

Sad.

WEEK 7:  Escareno and Crew outlast surprised Heshians, 27-16....but no play-off seeds changed.

Stop the press!  Hold everything.  Just when you thought it was safe to pencil in the play-off seeds for the Winter MVBA Play-offs.......you might have to re-think your selections.

Really?

The Rancho Cucamunga Busters defeated the La Verne Heshians, 27-16, before a capacity crowd at the Lutheran Church last Sunday.  The win was the club's first of the year, coming in the last week of the regular season.  David Escareno scored a game high 17 points, shooting a mere 46% from the field.  In the second half alone, he went 7-12, including 1-2 from beyond the arc.  Aly Khan finished with a respectable 8 points....and F Greg Malone chipped in with a 'chippy' 6 points and 6 rebounds.  Playing for the AWOL Judah DeLeon was Cutter Guard Evan Moritani, who scored another 5 points to cap a big win for the Busters!

Or is it?

"Turns out that they would have been 4th seed no matter what happened," said a league official.  "If those guys from Fontana were playing for anything....they were playing for pride."  If there ARE such things as moral victories, then this was certainly one for the Busters.  Now they have a little mojo going into the tournament, were they can expect hightened competition.  "We have no apologies for our play the first three games of our season," said Buster GM Jamie Girard after the game.  "We played much better in this one, and we thought we could win it at half.  We just had to keep going, get the ball to David and let him create for us.  This gives us confidence that we can match-up well against the Harvest.  We'll see.  Hopefully I can play in the play-offs if I stop faking a back injury, er.........I mean, ..........if my back holds up.  Say, ....you want to invest in some prime property?  Could I interest you in attending an open house?"

As for the Heshians, the loss came out of no-where, as many expected them to dispose of the Busters.  Jeff Andrew and Chad Coffman went a combined 13-38 in the game, and were outrebounded 42-21.  Role players Mike Clapp and Jay Willman each shot less than 20% from the field.  Their first round opponent is the La Verne Cutters, however,......a team that is struggling more than the Heshian Brotherhood....

HARVEST PLOW CUTTERS, CAP OFF PERFECT SEASON!

CLAREMONT HARVEST HONORED AT CITY HALL.  DOES #1 SEED HAVE ANY SPECIAL MEANING?

With the work ethic and iron will of a farmer, the Claremont Harvest played their last game exactly like their first.  They dominated.

The Harvest defeated the Cutters, 48-27, in the last game of the MVBA season.  Hector Harvest had a lights-out 23 points, going 8-12 from 3 point distance.  He scorched the La Verne Cutters, dribbling through their defense and shooting with the greatest of ease.  Steve Rush contributed a stellar 7 points and 5 rebounds, as the whole team had a chance to play limited minutes, and rest for the play-offs.  Jordan Thomas, Harvest captain and leading candidate for league MVP, played just 21 minutes, finishing with a respectable 13 points.  There was very little doubt which way this contest would go in the beginning, when the Harvest capped a 11-2 run at the 10 minute mark.  The Cutters fought back, behind newly acquired Aundi Cutter, whose 12 points were the source of their second half surge.  Chris DeLang was able to put in a tentative 15 points, but the rest of the roster shot a ice cold 32% from the field.  After the game, we caught up with Harvest Captain Jordan Thomas.  He had this to say:  "Well guys, we are not celebrating just yet.  Nope.  I told our guys that to pour champagne in the locker room over clinching the first seed is ....well.......something the L.A. Angels would do.  It's just too premature.  We are ecstatic over our play this year!  To assemble these guys together, and learn each other's tendencies and gel as a team over 7 games???  I'm impressed.  But it's not over.  We have to go out and defend David Escareno in Round 1, and that's not an easy task.  Plus, I'm afraid of Senator Palpatating."  After the game, The Mayor of Claremont met the team at the front steps of City Hall.  He proclaimed this day "Harvest Day" in Claremont, and he vowed a parade if they win the title!

As the league awaits the Commissioner's ruling on teams for the spring season, all is calm in the Harvest Den.  They control their own destiny, and have the players to make a championship a reality.

WEEK 5: CUTTERS ONE-UP BUSTERS!

Scott Harvey's last minute 3-pointer vaults Cutters into a tie for second place.  Busters suffer second defeat.

In perhaps the most entertaining MVBA game yet, the Cutters defeated the Rancho Cucamonga Busters, 24-23 last Sunday at the Church Gym.  Scott Harvey went 5-9 from behind the arch, and his triple with 25 seconds left was the game winner.  The win puts the Cutters back in the race for the second seed, and leaves the Busters with their second loss in two games.  "We felt that the best team didn't win this one," said Rancho GM Jamie Girard after the game.  "That's not taking away anything from the Cutters, of course.  They played a good game.  We had our opportunities in the second half, ...and we just didn't capitalize.  I would love a chance to run that again."  The Cutters were exhausted after the game, as they ran with only 4 men for the second time this season.  G Chris DeLang did not have a solid effort, as he shot a mere 5-21 from the field.  G Evan Moritani and Harvey combined for 15 points, though, as that proved to be the tale of the tape.  For the Busters, G Aly Khan was solid from the field, scoring 15 points, 12 of which came in the second half.  Greg Moore's miss with 13 seconds left in the game locked it up for the Cutters.  The game also marked the debut of G Judd DeLeon.  The club signed him to a 10-day contract, as the Monrovia native went 4-12, with a noteable 'juke' move late in the game.  The crowd was livid, as they chanted "We Want Jude!"  Next week, the Cutters take on the team that shares the second seed with them, the La Verne Heshians.  Who are the better La Verneians?  Also, the Busters look to rebound against the Harvest.

HARVEST RUN AND GUN HESHIANS...

Bad game shooting leaves Heshians smarting.

Was this the week that a team got over that hump and beat the mighty Harvest?

Hmmmmmm.........

The Harvest rolled over the Heshians, 39-21, Sunday in their second match-up of the year, and took their 5th win in five games.  Jordan Thomas cleaned up with 20 points and 6 assists, while Steve Rush contributed a nice 14 points.  Aaron Christensen chipped in a steady 8 points as well.  The Heshians started off the game hot, hitting their first four shots, and staking themselves to a 5 point lead.  But the wheels came of off the wagon, and the Heshians took a record 23 second-half 3-pointers.  They connected on less than half of them.  Chad Coffman, a Heshian mainstay, finished the game 7-21, finding many of his shots tapped out of the rim.  The Andrew brothers were not enough, although F Brett Andrew had 5 steals, 3 loose balls and 7 rebounds in limited minutes.  The loss puts the Heshians in a tie for second place with the Cutters, both at 2-3.  The story for the Harvest wasn't necessarily the win, but the brewing controversy involving a rift between G Hector Harvest, and G Steve Rush.  The team declined to discuss the details, but a source close to the situation told the associated press that "Rush conveniently forgets to pick up Hector before the game, thus sucking up a majority of the game minutes.  The team wins, but arguably their best player doesn't even make the cut."  The Harvest, despite their rifts, continue to march towards a title unchecked by the league.

WEEK 6:

Not long ago, the Heshian's future looked grim.  Jason Hockenbery's injury after Game 1 of the season had a murky feel to it, as the league began to wonder.  How would they respond without their leader?  But guys took on new roles.  Players were signed that have contributed immensely.  Their GM has worked his magic, and has moved the La Verne Heshians into a position to be the second seed in the play-off tournament!

Jeff Andrew and crew dismantled the Cutters, 34-29 last Sunday, as the final score was not a barometer for the game.  The Andrew brothers ran amuck again, to the tune of 23 points combined.  Jeff Andrew's line looked like an all star's....13 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists on 55% shooting for the game.  Chad Coffman led all scores with 23, as the size of the Heshians proved to be the undoing of the lowly Cutters.  Jay Willman and Brett Andrew worked to limit the shooters of the Cutters to a season low 36% from beyond the arch.....hardly a chance given to the opposition.  Next up, a meeting with the Busters.  With a win, these Heshians would be riding a three game winning streak into the play-offs!

As for the Cutters, ........well.........

They lose in what is becoming "typical style" for the Cutters:  Under-manned and out-played.  Johnny DeLang's last minute flurry of three's was not enough to erase away a disastrous defeat for the Cutters, where they were outrebounded 34-13.  Points in the Paint?  21-3 in favor of the Heshians.  Do the Cutters have a shot at a title?  Can they win a game?  We asked GM Chris DeLang after the game:  "Things aren't going really well right now for our basketball club, it's pretty obvious.  I don't think that it's a case of us not having the talent.  I don't believe that.  I think that there are a couple of internal issues with players, and I don't think that this group has "bought" into this team.  Hats off to the fellas that come and compete,....but we can't fill out a decent roster for a game.  We've tried to fine these guys, and remprimand them, but in the end they have their agendas.  It's sad.  We'll make the necessary moves in the off-season to weed out some personnel.  Let's get one thing straight.....I fully support the guys, and I hope we get in some kind of grove before the play-offs..."

Heshians' B. Andrew, Defensive Specialist

F Brett Andrew is quietly making a case for Defensive Player of the year...

It is about 20 minutes before game time, and the string of hung over rejects enters the gym.  Their 30 something bodies are dehydrated and tired from the Saturday Night activity last evening.  So, they start playing grab ass, and shooting.  Then they shoot some more.  But not Brett Andrew.  He enters the gym with his wife and their daughter.  He begins to practice jumping, stretching, rebounding.  For Andrew, his performance isn't judged by how many cheap 3 pointers that he hits.  No.  His best game comes when he is on the ground, grabbing a loose ball.  He helps his team win with his ability to close the passing lanes, and intercept balls....and not jump shooting with no remorse.  His best game is his defense.  "I always try to ask myself if I can be the best rebounder in the gym.  That is, when I am cleaning the glass, my whole game starts to come together.  I pick off steals, and my shot starts coming into form.  But it starts with defense."  While he is not the most physical guy in the gym, he seems to be at the right place, at the right time.  He causes havoc for offenses that like to play two man give-and-go.  Fans can often see him on the ground, diving for loose balls, while others just watch.  Maybe we are looking at the Defensive player of the year?  Only time will tell.  Andrew's contract runs through the end of this year.  At that time, he will be free to sign with any club.  "I don't think about any of that stuff, honestly.  I just think about my family, and the Bicycle Casino poker tourney that I'm in next week..."

-Free Agent G Judd DeLeon declined a 10-day contract offer from his home-town La Verne Cutters on Friday, and on Saturday accepted a similiar offer with the Rancho Cucamonga Busters.  It was unclear as to the reason behind his sudden change of heart.  DeLeon played 15 minutes in the Buster loss to the Cutters, scoring 7 points......

HESHIAN PRIDE, BROTHER!

The Heshians are starting to win games. But if it wasn't for the men behind the curtain.....where would they be?

Brett Hockenbery sits at his desk on a Sunday afternoon, pressing numbers into a calculator feverishly...as if he was avoiding the plague.  He is not at home.  He is not playing with the La Verne Heshians...the MVBA team that he runs.  He is at work, at Tile Expo, working on selling his next item.  Brett Hockenbery, along with G Dominic Skahill, can't probably play in one game this year.  They work to keep the Heshians alive.

"It's not that we don't love the game of basketball....we do.  We love it.  It's just that we have a vision....and that's to run a very successful Tile, flooring and basketball business..." remarked G Dominic Skahill, who has taken on the role of assistant GM.  "We tried to assemble the best roster with respect to longevity...that is, those players that were commited to the team FOR THE WHOLE YEAR.  That means we lost out on free agents that team's like the Cutters signed.....those players have not been very reliable.  We are happy with the players that we have.  We'll take it."

There is no doubt that the Heshians are a good team.  They have the length, and at times the defense, that can win consistently.  But who knows what party lurkes around the corner, stretching into the wee hours of Saturday Morning and threatening the fate of the Heshian players..........?

DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR BALLS!  AND QUIT GRITTIN' OUTSIDE THE GYM DANNY!!!

JAY HOCK'S INJURY HURTS HESHIONS CHANCES...

It all started so well for the Heshions.  They had a great training camp, and started the season with a first half for the ages!  That first half was during their first game...against the Cowboys, when they enjoyed an impressive lead at 22-12 with 6:01 remaining in the first half.  After that, the Cowboys went on a 19-12 run, and collected the victory.  But the loss for Brett Hock and bunch wasn't the worst one that they would experience during the 2008-2009 MVBA Season.  Jay Hock, their center and court leader, was injured Christmas Eve in a freak accident. A torn ligament and broken ankle was the end result for the 6'4" center out of Chino, CA....and the Heshions luck seemed to take a hit.  Jay Hock was their inside presence, their rock upon which their offense rested on.  As a result, the center position (and more importantly rebounding edge) is in question for the La Verne club.  Brett Hock, GM of the Heshions, was very candid about his brother's injury: "We are very disappointed in losing Jay for the season, needless to say.  Besides the fact that he scored points for us...and collected boards for us....he was our emotional leader.  He set the stage for our rookies....as far as game intensity goes.  We have been playing our back-up centers evenly, to help us shoulder the burden.  I thought Jeff Andrew did a great job in helping us with our toughness up front.  But we are going to need more from our front court....no question about that...."  Can the Heshions re-establish their post game?  We will see....

ROSTERS

The following rosters are in place, and set for the season.  Each team receives 1 roving roster spot, a spot that captains can use on 1 player that is not on the original roster.  When it is used, that player is added to the team and can play for the rest of the year.***If any changes need to be made to the rosters, the team captain must petition the commissioner (C. DeLang).  The Commissioner must rule on any matter within 24 hrs....

'BOYS LOOK TO IMPRESS IN 2009...

It was their first game of the season.  The Cowboys of Chino knew that speed and shooting was their meal-ticket to success, but it had yet to translate onto the court.  Training camp had been marred by lack of participation, and general lack of organization.  Bryant Ribota, captain, adds, "We thought training camp ended a little too soon for us.  I mean, we were ready as far as our speed and agility...but we needed a little more focus as a group.  I think that has played out into the season, particularly in the second game.  BUT....we are one and one, and we probably need a center.....BUT, I think we have some time to correct the things that we don't do well.....and put together some good games."  With just 8 points in Sundays game, the Cowboy offense was not as efficient as in game 1.  Many feel they do need that extra rebounder that most teams have.  But the 'Boys do have their youth, and as they get to know teams around the league.... they will get a feel for the effort it will take to win consistently.  With guys like Ribota, and G Anthony Diaz, the Cowboys can wrangle in some solid performances...
